Broken Tails
I noticed that my dog’s tail had a slight droop where it has always been straight. I felt for any swelling and noticed he did not like me messing with his tail. At this time I could still move the tail. What I should have done is gotten a splint and taped it onto the affected area. But I did not and within two weeks the tail had fused into a bent shape.
Tail Problems - Some dogs are known for exuberant tail wagging which can cause breaks. Here is some advice as my dog just had a fracture that has healed in a slightly curved tail where once it was straight.
If you suspect a broken tail, get your dog to a vet right away.
How to stabilize a broken tail?
If your vet says they usually just dock the tail, take him to another vet.
Assure the new vet that you are capable to tending to the dog for a couple of weeks because keeping the cast on a broken tail is very hard.
You will have to be with the dog a lot of the time.
You will have to keep him quiet and possibly confined.
You will have to keep him from chewing on the cast and licking it or pulling it off.
Take him back to the vet if any of the following happens.
- Don't let the cast or splint become wet or damaged
- The cast falls off or gives off a bad smell
- The pet chews his cast or splint off
- You can't keep the dog quiet enough to let it heal.
- You pet looks like he is in pain
